‘Are you getting enough sleep?’ she enquired like a mother hen.

‘Yes I’m fine.’ I lied. The truth was I hated going back to that empty flat. During the day, working, I
was OK. It was the evenings at home when I really missed Anne. My office couch was becoming my
second home and Friday evenings were the worse with a long lonely weekend in front of me.

‘Go on, off you go and have a nice weekend. Nice and early Monday morning, you and I are going to
play detective. We’ve got a missing accountant to find.’

            ‘A what!’

‘That’s what I said. Go on, see you Monday.’

George was still in his office but I had no wish to discuss missing persons with him so I decided to
            make an early exit myself.

I stopped off at a supermarket on the way home and bought my next three days provisions, a
cooked chicken, a frozen Admirals Fish Pie and a bottle of Sauvignon. The good thing about
shopping for one is you can use the “Ten Items or Less” till and avoid the long queues.

As I pulled out of the car park, I was aware of a car across the road, parked on double yellows,

pulling away behind me. It was a Silver Grey Volvo and I kept tabs on it in my rear view mirror all
the way to Perivale. It turned off about a mile before I reached my apartment so I was either wrong
about it being a tail or the driver recognised where I was heading.

The Admirals pie, two glasses of Sauvignon and a boring late night movie soon put me to sleep. The
ringing of the telephone finally brought me round.

The answer phone eventually clicked in and I heard Mex’s voice
‘Hi its Mex. Listen I’ve been doing some digging around and I might have something for you
on Arnold Warner. Meet me in the Bricklayers at midday tomorrow. Sayonara Sherlock.’

I looked at my watch, Mex Delgado, CIA Directorate of Support European Global Services, is helping
me find a missing bent accountant at a quarter past two in the morning?
