Lester took it and tore it in half. Extracting a leather wallet from his inside pocket, he put one half of
the bill inside and at the same time took out a small cellophane envelope containing a black and

white photograph which he handed to Arnold together with the other half of the bill.

The picture was of a young woman with a very young baby.

‘The next time you see the other half of your bill the person holding it will be your mother. That is a
promise. The photograph is of her with you on the day you were born.’

Arnold could not take his eyes away from the snapshot ‘She is beautiful.’ He murmured.

‘I said it will be a difficult journey for you. Put the bill inside the envelope and keep it with you at all
times.’

Arnold clicked open the press stud and inserted the bill.

‘Keep the bill and the photograph safe but if at any time you feel you don’t want to continue, then
simply hand the bill back to me and we will finish there and then. One other thing. Nothing of this
must ever get out. You must never mention this to anyone, not Gloria and James Warner, not to
your school friends not even to a cop, a lawyer or a Judge. No one. There are people who would do
anything to stop you knowing the truth, anything! Mention this and I may not be able to keep you
safe. I think that is all for this visit.’

Mr Lester got out of the car. ‘Take the boy home.’ He instructed the driver.

‘When will I see you again?’ Arnold implored.

‘We will pick you up when I am ready.’

‘But how will you know where I am?’

‘Do not worry Arnold; I always know where you are.’

The Sedan pulled away. Arnold turned and through the rear window, watched the Claret Red

Plymouth Caravelle draw up and Mr. Lester got in.
