George sat deep in thought after Albert had left. Eventually he spoke, or to be more accurate, he
            mumbled, almost to himself.

‘On the face of it that memo would destroy his conspiracy theory, but where did it come from?
Look Bryant, whatever that memo may say when Albert has decoded it and ignoring the fact that it
may satisfy Alfred Barker and his bosses in Vauxhall Cross, I want you to concentrate on Arnold
Warner. It is he who interests me more than any memo.’

I left the Cottage and headed for Chiswick. I still didn’t know if Arnold had picked up his “Peter
Collins” passport but now I knew about the memo I wondered if he might have posted the original

to himself. Once again, the Silver Grey Volvo was shadowing me. I decided to give the Chiswick
Business Accommodation Bureau a miss for now and find out exactly what Barker was up to.

At the next set of red lights, I leaped out of my car and ran to the Silver Volvo, four cars back, and
            jumped into the passenger seat.

            ‘Get down!’

I needed no second bidding, training made me react automatically to those commands.

Barker gunned the Volvo, weaving in and out of traffic and using both lanes to the consternation of
            oncoming traffic.

‘Damn. They are right behind us! You may as well sit up.’

‘Who is right behind us?’ I asked.

            ‘Your tail.’

            ‘What tail?’

‘Are you losing your touch Bryant? You’ve been tailed since last Saturday when you left the
            Bricklayers.’

‘I don’t think it’s so much losing my touch as being fully occupied watching you following me
everywhere. Why have you been tailing me?’

‘There are eighteen ghosts watching you twenty four seven. I have been keeping an eye open for
            you.’

‘So how come you were in the Bricklayers before me on Saturday?’

            ‘I followed Mex there.’

I decided not to ask why he had been tailing Mex, the less I knew about Barker the better.

             ‘Where are we heading?’
