crucifix position with your hands behind your back and not being able to react. Must cause a
nightmare in the brain. Right, this is where we get off the Orbital and loose our tail.’
The overhead sign said JUNCTION 15 EXIT CLOSED but as we approached, Barker flashed his
headlights and the police car, parked to stop anyone getting onto the slip road, moved to allow us
through. Another police car was parked at the top of the slipway and the driver got out as we
approached.
‘I’ve been told to ask if you require an escort sir.’
‘No thanks. We are OK now but do not open the exit too soon. They are tailing with two cars but
there can well be a third car hanging back in case anything like this happens.’
Barker got out of the car and kept peering skywards.
‘Just making sure they haven’t put a chopper up.’
‘Very good sir.’ The copper saluted and we drove off.
I finished reading the report and as I did so, we entered the driveway to the “Hayes and Harlington
Mortuary.”
A young man was waiting at the doorway.
‘Hello Thomas. Have you set up?’ Barker enquired.
‘Not yet sir, only just arrived.’
‘Have a word with the caretaker; see if the Chapel’s free. Right Bryant let me introduce you to
Arnold Warner.’
We went through to the Morgue.
‘The drawers on the right are refrigerated, John Doe’s etcetera that have to be kept in good
condition for identification, cadavers in these drawers on the left are not refrigerated and are
slowly deteriorating, mainly just awaiting burial or cremation. We are keeping Warner nice and
cold.’ Barker informed me.
He opened one of the refrigerated drawers to reveal a body covered in a white shroud.
‘Be prepared for the face, it is not very nice but everything else I am sure you are used to.’
He was right. The face was almost scraped out but the torso and legs were very much as I expected
from the Pathologist report.
‘Like you Bryant, I have undergone torture resistance training but no one could possibly resist what
he’s gone through. What do you think?’
