ANNE’S OFFICE
                                                     MI6 BUILDING.

                                                          LONDON

                                TH
            MONDAY MARCH 16 1998
The stake out had been a loser. She and Thomas had watched the video several times and both
agreed they had filmed nothing untoward, everybody that entered the pub had come out again and
the ambulance must have been on a genuine call. Hagley must have got it wrong and all she could

do was to wait and see if he signalled her again.

She did not have long to wait.

Stephen Caldicot – attached to CIA requests a meet with you. Proposes dinner at 8 o’clock at Calvos,
                                                                       th
Davies Street just down from Bond Street station Monday 16 March. He will wait till ten. Mick.

She knew she must go but she would not go alone. She spoke with Special Ops and explained she
needed covert escorting that evening. Once again, her request was acknowledged in record time.

At eight o’clock, precisely, the taxi dropped her outside Calvos Restaurant. Thomas and a colleague
were already in the restaurant and two more were in a car parked around the corner.

A dashing waiter greeted her as she entered.

‘Good Evening madam, are you dining alone this evening?’

‘No. I am dining with Mister Caldicot.’

‘Oh yes. I believe he has left something for you behind the bar. Would you come this way?’

Anne followed him to the bar. The waiter leaned over the counter and from behind the cash
register, took an envelope, which he handed to her.

It was a brief message, an apology to say that he was unavoidably detained and could she possibly
arrange to come again same time tomorrow?

‘Damn.’ She muttered under her breath.

‘I believe Mr. Caldicot has had to cancel the reservation. I’m awfully sorry.’ The waiter apologised.

Yes. Thank you.’ Anne turned and made her way out of the restaurant and waited a few yards
down. Thomas came out of Calvos and approached her.

‘It’s off’ said Anne before he could speak. ‘It looks as though it could be on again same time
tomorrow. I’ll confirm in the morning’

‘OK. I will stand everyone down. Do you need a lift back to base?’
