‘Is the car still behind us cabby?’

‘Yes miss. It’s three cars back but I still can’t see who’s in the car, just two people and it is definitely
a black Rover Sterling.’

‘It’s OK, I heard that. Tell the cabby to drive normally and I will ring you back as soon as we pick you
up.’

‘The Met says to drive normally; they will ring back when they have picked us up.’

‘Does this happen all the time to you miss? What an exciting life you must lead.’

‘No, I am usually at a desk all day.’ Anne wished she were behind it right now.

Anne’s mobile rang again.

‘Control Room Inspector again. We have picked you up and a plain car is sat behind the Rover
Sterling . Because of who you are, we need to get an armed response car to you as well. As soon as
it gets to you, the armed response car will stop the Rover. I’ll stay on line if you have plenty of
battery left in your phone.’

Anne could hear radio traffic on the phone and a short burst of siren.

‘Ok, the car has been stopped.’

‘Thank you Inspector.’

Anne switched off the phone. ‘Stop here please cabby. The police have stopped them.’

The taxi halted and a car parked in front of them. Two police officers got out and approached.

‘Good evening miss. The driver and passenger have been apprehended. They were not armed but
they are claiming Diplomatic Immunity. Would you like to come with me and see if you know or
recognise either of them?’

They walked back fifty yards and Anne looked into the car.

‘You!’ she exclaimed.
