The cab pulled up and Caldicot vanished into the evening crowd.

‘Where to now Miss? Still Perivale?’

Anne was in two minds, should she go back to Vauxhall Cross and pick up her car or stay in this nice
cosy cab and go straight home. She chose the latter.

‘Perivale please.’ She gave the cabby the address.

She desperately wanted to see what was in the envelope but the back of a taxi was no place to
study whatever it contained. She would have to be careful to hide it away from Bryant even though
she yearned for his help and advice but the secrecy of the service was second nature and she knew
she had to keep whatever it was between herself and Barker.

The cabby leaned back and opened the dividing window.

‘Don’t mind me asking Miss but have you got marital problems?’

            ‘Whatever do you mean?’

‘Well, I thought that when we were taking that young man for a tour of London that someone was
following me and the same car has been behind me, well a couple of cars back, since we dropped
            him off.’

She resisted the urge to turn and look. ‘What type of car is it?’

‘It’s a black Rover Sterling. It never gets close enough to read the number plate but there are two
people in it in the front seats. Again it has never got near enough for me to see if they are male or
            female.’

‘Without doing a dramatic U turn, could you make your way to Vauxhall Cross?’

‘What the MI6 building? You’re not a spy are you?’

Anne rang the duty officer and told him what was happening.

‘OK. I will get on to the Met. I’ll give them your number.’

Her phone rang almost straight away.

‘This is the Metropolitan Police control room inspector. We have been asked to assist as you are
being followed. Will you ask the driver for his Hackney Carriage number.’ Anne checked with the
driver and gave it to him.

‘I need to know exactly where you are now.’

Anne checked out the window and gave the inspector their position and direction of travel.

‘That’s good. What can you tell me about the car following you and is it still there.’
