Seconds later, Anne appeared in shot running up to the stretcher. She looked at the face but did
not pull the blanket back. She turned away and moments later we could hear her re enter the

            room.

‘It wasn’t Warner,’ we heard her telling Thomas, ’it was a young woman in a pretty bad way, lots of
            blood around the mouth.’

            Thomas stopped the tape.

            ‘Is that all? ’I asked.

‘No Sir,’ Thomas replied, ‘I started filming an hour before the pub opened and another hour after it
closed. I used a lot of tapes, of course, but I have edited the people going in and coming out again
on to one tape. I have counted them all in and counted them out again, so to speak. Nobody is
missing. Everyone that went in came out. The ambulance business was a disappointment. I have

looked at it over and over and I cannot see that it was anything to do with Warner.’

            I turned to Barker.

‘Do we know who Warner was meeting?’

            ‘No we don’t.’

‘But one of the men Thomas has counted in and out again could have been Warner. You wouldn’t
recognise him of course but have you recognised anyone else, someone from the service?

‘No, either the message Anne received was wrong or Warner had changed his mind about the
meeting. I believe he must have arranged another meet at the place where he was tortured and

            killed.’

‘No, you are probably right. Thomas may I have a copy of the tapes?’

‘I have already prepared them, sir’
