Collinson took his pipe from his pocket and fumbled around in his jacket pocket for his pouch of
tobacco.
‘OK William. I can take it from here. Thank you for a very concise appraisal of the events. Thank
you.’ George interrupted.
When Collinson had gone George turned off the ceiling fan then went to his filing cabinet to come
back with two generous plastic beakers of Johnnie Walker Black Label.
‘I know it’s a bit early but a toast to clear breathable air will suffice.
He settled himself into his well-cushioned chair behind his desk and studied his drink for a few
moments. It gave me time to wonder how much of a coincidence it was that Mex had introduced
me to Gabriela. I held up my beaker, ‘Cheers George.’
‘America has two choices; the first is to create mayhem and unrest to keep the army in situ. The CIA
will probably try to go down that path but the UN is resolute, demilitarisation is the key to
permanent peace. The demise of the anti insurgency army is inevitable.
The second choice is to starve China out of the equation by providing better trade deals and
financial assistance than they can provide. That is where we come in.
In Guatemala Collinson has organised people who will promote trade with the US and the rest of
the World and lobby to oppose trade with the People’s Republic of China.
Our government realises the implications of a Latin American communist state and will be using its
influence at the UN and elsewhere to facilitate the same solution, you can be sure.’
George recognised I wanted to interrupt. ‘I know, I know. Arnold Warner. The CIA use paymasters
to send funds around the World. Arnold Warner is, or rather was, prior to his disappearance, such a
paymaster.’
‘So why wasn’t this in Barker’s brief? Why spin a story about him being an investment advisor?’
‘Investment advisor is his cover. Arnold Warner tried to blackmail us.’
‘Blackmail! On what basis?’
‘We are a department of UK intelligence, which is protecting the interests of a friendly nation,
namely their trading position, something that happens all the time. It could be argued this is the
reason we were set up, to aid our American allies positively instead of waiting for God knows how
many committees to come up with a weak proposition. Warner says he is in possession of a memo
that shows that we are engaged in covert operations, not trade negotiations, sponsored by
American Dollars.’
‘So what’s the problem? It would be easy to disprove these allegations.’
