I rang the mobile number on the card the inspector had given me. It was answered immediately.
‘D.I.Harvey,’
‘Good morning inspector. It’s Bryant from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. I am at the
Chiswick Business and Accommodation Bureau on Chiswick High Road. An American, killed in the
same manner as Frank Furlong, opened a post box and a deposit box here. I need your help to
requisition the deposit box and its contents. I also need to confirm if prints on the deposit box
match the body in the morgue, can you assist?’
‘Don’t you have your own forensics?’
‘We do but Frank’s murder, coming so soon after I visited him, makes me think I should keep things
very close to my chest.’
‘You are probably right, be there in five.’
He and his sergeant took a little longer, fifteen minutes to be exact.
‘Sorry for the delay. Had to pick up a guy from SOCO, he’s in the car.’
He turned to the woman and he and sergeant Earl showed her their warrant cards.
‘I believe you have some mail and a deposit box that would assist us in a murder enquiry?’
She opened the post box, which contained one envelope that was clearly from the Passport Office.
‘I will fetch the deposit box.’
‘Don’t handle it; we don’t want too many fingerprints. The sergeant will come with you.’
They reappeared with Earl wearing blue gloves and carrying the opened deposit box. He took it
outside and put in the police car boot.
‘Were you expecting mail? Harvey asked.
‘I thought there might be a passport and some papers in the deposit box.’ I replied
‘Well the deposit box was empty.’ DS Earl informed me. ‘The post is obviously a passport but we
will let the guy from SOCO open it.’
‘Who is Peter Collins? D I Harvey asked.
‘A guy on a mortuary slab applied for one in a false name.’
‘Where to?’ asked Earl as he got into the driving seat.
‘Hayes and Harlington Private Mortuary and can you keep an eye in your mirror for a tail. I think
they have been called off but I can’t be certain.’
‘Who’s tailing you?’ asked Harvey.
‘Part of the crew that got to Frank and the guy on the slab.’ I replied.
‘Jeez. Blues and twos all the way then sergeant and this is Graham, our fingerprint man.’
