I rang Thomas from the security office in the entrance lobby as I didn’t think he would want to be
seen talking to me in the Special Ops office.
‘Hi Thomas, I have brought the tapes back.’
‘Oh thanks Bryant but you needn’t have bothered; I still have the master tape. Did we miss anything
on the tape?’
‘No. It was just as you said, everybody counted in and out and no sign of Warner.’ I lied.
‘Was there something else?’
‘Yes, Yes there is Thomas. I believe Anne asked for back up at a meeting. Were you involved in
that?’
‘I was part of the team assigned that evening but nothing materialised.’
‘How do you mean?’
‘Anne had arranged to meet someone at a restaurant, Calvos, just off Oxford Street but they didn’t
show.’
‘Do you know who she was supposed to meet?’
‘Not really, Anne never said who he was but I was already sat in the restaurant with a colleague
when she arrived. We had sat at the very back of the restaurant, close to the bar, so that we could
keep the whole place in view. Anne arrived and the waiter met her at the door, I couldn’t hear what
was said but then they both walked to the bar and he took an envelope from behind the till register
and gave it to her. She read it and then I overheard him say something like Mister Caldicot had
cancelled the reservation.’
‘Mister Caldicot, you are sure about the name?’
‘Absolutely, that was the name, Caldicot.’
‘Then what happened?’
‘I followed Anne out and she confirmed the meet was off and that it would probably happen the
same time tomorrow. That night, of course, was the car catastrophe. I’m sorry Bryant; I don’t know
what else to call it.’
‘Did she drive to the restaurant?’
‘No her car was in our car park. I offered to drive her to pick it up but she said she would take a taxi
and go straight home.’
‘And yet she came home eventually in her car?’
‘I guess she must have changed her mind.’
‘I guess she must have but I wonder why. Thanks for your help Thomas’
