FULHAM
TH
SATURDAY APRIL 18 1998
I took a cab to Fulham to pick up my car but I also wanted to ask Frank about the witnesses.
We passed a newsstand in Fulham Road. “COP INVESTIGATOR CRUSHED TO DEATH!”
The gates were shut tight and a young bobby stood guard. I showed him my ID and he opened them
to let me through.
A couple of SOCO’s were leaving and two detectives stood by the Jaguar, which was now resting on
the ground. I showed my ID.
‘I’m DI Harvey and this is DS Earl. How can we help you?’
‘Is Frank dead?’
‘ ’Fraid so. Were you meeting him?’
‘No, I met with him yesterday.’
‘What time was that?’
‘Mid morning, perhaps about eleven.’
‘Why did you need to see him and why are you back today?’
‘I am afraid I can’t tell you that.’
‘Official secret is it?’
‘As you are well aware, Detective Inspector, everything I do is subject to the official secrets act.’
‘OK. Did you go up to the office?’
‘Yes.’
‘Was the office open?’
‘No it was double locked. Frank was a very careful man, far too careful to be crushed to death.’
‘That’s what my Chief Superintendant thinks. He knew Frank from way back apparently. You don’t
think it was an accident then?’
‘Those two axle stands were under the car yesterday.’ I pointed to the corner of the yard.
‘Well they certainly weren’t there when we found him and if someone had jacked the car up to
remove them then he would have had time to scramble clear but he was found in the position you
would expect him to be if he was working under the car.’
‘In that case,’ I suggested, ‘there must have been more than one person.’
