‘Perhaps because he had unwittingly shown his report had been altered.’ Bren didn’t sound
convincing.
‘But that wouldn’t make sense. Once he revealed the truth to me, his murder achieved nothing.’
‘Except for the murderer. He would want to find out what he had told you and then killed him to
stop him telling anyone else.’
‘That would account for taking his laptop of course.’
Are you being followed?’
‘Apparently so according to Barker, I should have been more careful.’
‘But you couldn’t have known what Frank Furlong was going to tell you. You mustn’t beat yourself
up.’
‘I just wonder if there is a psychopath in this American SOU. Does someone just enjoy killing? Is
that why he murdered Anne and Frank, just because he could? Fred Callaway has told me he
overheard Anne requesting special ops back up for a meet she was to have on the night she was
killed. Did she have an idea that her life might be in danger and if so did she know where that
danger lay? I need to speak with special ops.’
‘Will they tell you anything?’
‘Normally no, but if Thomas, who did the filming, was also one of her back up then I should get
lucky. I also want to call into Chiswick in case Warner did post another memo to himself. Did you
have a look at Warner’s background?’
‘Yes I did but there really isn’t anything. Normal upbringing, good scholar, nothing to suggest he
would turn out to be a blackmailer. Nothing out of the ordinary until his two year sabbatical.’
‘Well, thanks for trying. I wonder how he managed to pay for that? I know kids go backpacking for
six months and even longer sometimes, earning a few bob as they go but two years. He must have
saved a lot of pocket money.’
‘He probably paid for it with the proceeds from selling his car.’
‘Car! What car? Arnold couldn’t drive.’
‘No. It was his parents who didn’t drive. His mother never had a driving licence but his father had to
surrender his after a series of heart attacks. The Warners bought Arnold a car so he could drive
them everywhere. His college rag,” The Charlestown High Times” nominated him for a Good
Samaritan award. ’
‘So why did he tell the taxi firm he didn’t drive and why did Gabriela believe he didn’t drive?’
‘Would you like me to add this to the list of imponderables?’ Bren asked with a touch of irony in her
voice.
‘Well our Arnold is certainly turning out to be an enigma, no photographs, lying about whether he
could drive and resisting the most horrific torture. I’m off to the big house to speak to Thomas.’
