‘Not according to the bakery workers.’ Added DS Earl. ‘They saw a man matching your description
leave the premises at about mid day throw up outside the gates and then another young, slim man,
arrive about two o’clock and leave half an hour later. They saw no one else.’
‘Was that you who threw up?’ asked the inspector.
‘Yes, heavy night before, I am ashamed to say. If there was only one person then either they used a
pressure hold, seems unlikely, or injected him with something.’
I was sure Frank had been murdered and his murder linked to Warner.
‘Something like Succinylcholine Chloride.’ I continued.
‘What does that do?’ asked the DS
‘In the correct dosage it holds a person in paralysis for about three minutes. It is normally used in
delicate operations where the patient has to be kept perfectly still. An overdose can lead to a heart
attack. Has the pathologist report shown any thing in his system or perhaps a hypodermic needle
puncture mark, probably in the neck?’
The inspector nodded to the DS to get on the phone and find out.
‘Look, while he’s gone, Bryant, I think you probably know more about this than you can say. Tell
me, do you have any suspicions who might have killed him?
‘I’ll let you know when the DS comes back with the lab report. Was anything taken?’
‘Just his laptop. I say just but it probably contained all his accident reports, a life’s work.’
The DS reappeared. ‘He’s spot on, but they are not sure yet whether death was caused by the drug
or by the downward pressure of the car on top of him.’
‘So, Bryant, does this confirmation give you an indication of who did it.’
‘Yes it does but you might as well close your investigation now. Even if you found the murderer
there would be no prosecution, the murderer would have diplomatic immunity.’
‘What Embassy?’
‘American I’m afraid, part of a special operations unit.’
‘Thanks Bryant, I shan’t reveal my source, of course, right sergeant?’
‘Of course Sir.’
‘But if ever you need anything or you think you can tell me more, here’s my card.’
