“THE COTTAGE”
                                                   KENNINGTON ROAD.

                                                        LONDON
                              TH
            MONDAY APRIL 20 1998

Three people, including my wife, had now been murdered in what had seemed a perfectly simple
missing person case. It was clear to me the murderer or murderers were the American Special
Operations Unit and I was out for revenge.

I had spent the weekend viewing the videos Thomas had given me and repeatedly going through
the print out of Anne’s Project Black update and the Guatemala memo Albert had deciphered. The
memo contained nothing contentious, certainly no mention of covert activity. Anne’s update
revealed nothing more than Barker had appraised me, I had risked being caught in Oracle for
nothing. The video, however, was very revealing.

I switched on the video recorder and TV, inserted the tape, and called Brenda into my office.

‘Lock the door Bren. Sit down, no on the couch; I don’t want this to be too formal.’

            ‘You look very concerned ‘Boss.’

‘I am. I believe anyone involved in this case could be in danger. Three people have been murdered
            so far, including m wife.’

‘Anne, my God! They said it was an accident. But how and when did she become involved?’

‘The car fire was not an accident. On Friday, the man who investigated her death confirmed to me
that the car explosion was caused by plastic explosive and not by leaking petrol. A couple of hours
later he was murdered. Arnold Warner is currently lying on a cold slab; he too was murdered. At
this moment, I have no idea why Anne was murdered. I have been told that she was responsible for
initiating the investigation into Warner. She was sent a GCHQ intercept, in which Warner was trying
            to blackmail someone.

He claimed to have a memo, which implicated us in a covert operation in Guatemala. He arranged
to meet someone at a pub. He probably believed he was going to be paid blackmail money, but
instead was handed over to the Americans, actually a pretty logical thing to do. Whomever he was
supposed to meet could not have anticipated that he was being handed over to suffer torture and
            subsequent murder, however.

Anne knew about his visit and filmed the Gallery hoping to get him on camera and eventually tail
him but drew a blank. At least she, and her superiors, thought she hadn’t filmed anything important
but I want you to watch this.

            I pressed play.

We watched it through and I turned to Bren. ‘Does it show you anything?’

‘Nothing strikes me immediately other than the ambulance but if it was a girl on the stretcher and
not Warner then it must have been a coincidence.’
