She looked at her watch, nearly ten past. Why didn’t he ring? Now she started to panic. Was she
being set up or had someone changed their mind? After another five minutes and she was now
certain the whole thing had been called off. She lifted the handset and held it to her ear to make
certain there was a dialing tone. Just then a telephone rang, it was a mobile ring and somewhere in
the call box, was a mobile telephone. She moved the telephone directories and on the shelf behind
them was a Phillips mobile flashing. She picked it up and listened.

‘Good morning Svetlana. Now, the first thing I have to tell you is that five hundred thousand
roubles have been sent to your family in Moscow. If you do not do exactly as I say then the Russian
authorities will be notified that you have been receiving payments from us and sending the money
home. They, of course, will immediately recall you to Moscow and you and your family will find
            yourselves incarcerated in Lubyanka.’

He heard her hiss “you bastard” in Russian.

‘I do not, however, believe that will be necessary as you have already taken steps to hide the ten
thousand pounds you have been paid on account. I do hope your parcel arrives safely.’

‘Damn’, she thought to herself, ‘I should have been more careful.’

‘If you cooperate fully, there will be a further payment to you of a hundred and fifty thousand
pounds. I will also arrange a new identity for you and passage to anywhere in the World you may
wish to start a new life. Is that clear?’

‘Is that clear Svetlana?’ George repeated.

            ‘Perfectly clear.’ She muttered.

Your family now have enough money to afford to pay someone to get them out of Russia and join
you on Ipanema beach, or wherever you finally decide upon. The alternative is almost unthinkable.’

‘What do I have to do?’

            ‘Do you see that tramp?’

The caller must be watching her. She looked across towards the tramp who was eating what looked
like some bread or an old sandwich he must have found in the waste bin.

‘There is a waste bin next to him. I want you to take the mobile and put it into the bin. Somewhere
on top of the rubbish is an envelope. We know you are a courier for a Russian Agent and we know
exactly how you communicate with him. Make contact and deliver the envelope to him. If you
deviate from your usual procedure to warn him then we will expose you and your family.

If you do everything I ask there will be a second envelope. You will discover it in your flat. This will
contain a new British Passport and details of your new bank account containing a hundred and fifty
thousand pounds. This is the last time we will speak. The line went dead.

Svetlana took the mobile telephone and dumped it in the basket next to the tramp. No wonder the
dogs had been sniffing around him, he smelt vile. She found the envelope, put it in her pocket and
made her way back to the library. The tramp watched her go and when she was safely inside, he
too dropped a mobile telephone, earpiece and lapel microphone into the wastebasket.
