meeting for example nor any further reference to the amount of the blackmail demand. He did
refer, however, to London Property Invest as being a cover company for MI6. Warner had sounded
so nervous that George guessed that might be the last blackmail call.
The third call surprised George, not only because he was not sure he would ever hear from Warner
again but on this occasion, it was a much more positive Warner. This time he did not muffle his
voice and whereas George had been able to discern hesitancy, fear even, previously, he now spoke
with the daring of a seasoned villain. ‘Camden Arts Centre lunchtime Friday and bring fifty thousand
pounds as a token of your goodwill.’
‘I am afraid that is out of the question, not the money you understand nor Friday lunchtime but the
location.’
This obviously took him by surprise and in a much milder voice asked. ‘Why, what’s wrong with it ?’
‘There will be very few people in an arts centre on a Friday and if we are to talk and I am to pass
over fifty thousand pounds, which will be rather a large parcel I’m afraid, then with very few people
around we will be most conspicuous. I suggest somewhere busier and on a Friday lunchtime there
could be nowhere busier than a public house. There is a pub around the corner from my office and I
suggest we meet there, The Bricklayers just off the Edgware Road.’
‘You could have the pub staked out!’
‘I could far easier have a half empty building like the Arts Centre staked out. Shall we say around
one thirty?’
