‘I need to speak with him on a matter of National Importance. We had arranged to meet here.’
‘Really, I could ring his mobile for you if you wish, find out if he is on his way.’
‘Hagley pondered for a moment. He might have been set up but it was worth a try. He didn’t want
the opportunity of an immediate fifty grand passing by without taking a small chance. ‘OK, thanks.’
‘No problem.’
Mex began to ring a number on his mobile. ‘Who shall I say is waiting for him?’
‘Warner, Arnold Warner from Warner Global Assets, Boston.’
Mex took the news in his stride.
The mobile answered.
‘Delgado speaking sir, I am in the Bricklayers and there is a Mr. Warner who says he is meeting you
here. Are you on your way sir?’ Mex listened for a while and then turned to Hagley.
‘Do you think you were followed?’
‘I’m pretty certain not.’
Mex turned his attention back to the mobile. ‘He thinks not but he could never be sure of course.
Mex listened again. ‘Ok, we could try the ambulance swap. Set it up and if Mr. Warner decides not
to go along, I will ring you back. How long would it take to set up? Ok that’s fine.’
Mex put the mobile back into his pocket.
‘Mr. Alladyce is very anxious to meet you but is concerned there may have been a wire tap. He
would like to get you into the building but thinks you could be under close observation. We could
get you out of here with a bit of subterfuge. It is an old trick. An ambulance arrives and takes a
person away on a stretcher. Anyone watching might imagine it is you on the stretcher but we swap
you with one of the paramedics. We get you in to his office the same way. What do you think? If
you say no I will ring him back and I guess you will have to make other arrangements for yourself.’
Greed was Mick Hagley’s final undoing.
‘Yea, ok. Let’s go for it.’
