‘CIA paymasters do everything in an apparent legitimate fashion. Funding is transferred in a
businesslike manner, purchase of land, investment proceeds etc. Everything, on the surface at least,
appears genuine and above suspicion. Nothing would ever be transmitted to Warner encoded, that
would arouse suspicion. Warner could not have received an encoded message. What that means,’ I
hesitated but Bren finished it for me.
‘That means the memo Gabriela gave you is false and another imponderable is where did she get
it?’
‘There is something else doesn’t add up Bren. At the time Hagley was either being tortured or was
lying on a slab in the mortuary, it appears Anne received two signals from him. Can you look him up
under Assists and let me have everything on him?’
It only took Bren a couple of minutes and what I was looking for was there, his session cipher code.
‘Can you check for one of the spare code lines into the building and let me have the number and
then put an answer phone on it, no dialogue, just a tone blip.’
It took me a while to compose and encipher a signal for Hagley and eventually Brenda returned.
‘All arranged and here is your private number.’ She announced.
I rang Hagley’s answer phone and typed the coded numbers on the dial pad.
‘Right Bren, now we will wait and see if we get a reply from a dead man. I’ve asked him to confirm
there are no endorsements on his British Driving Licence as Human Resources Department need to
renew his International Driving Permit.’
‘And of course, Hagley would be aware that they know about his ban as they would have had to
forge a Licence for him to drive in the States.’ Bren added.
‘Exactly. Now there is something else I would like you to do. The name Caldicot. He is American but
that is about all I know. Not much to go on I am afraid, not even a first name. Probably arrived in
th
th
the UK around 14 , 15 of March. You might get lucky with one of the America’s Airline’s
manifests.’
‘OK. I’ll get on to it straight away.’
I sat down and wrote George a very sparse report but I could not concentrate my mind, it was
firmly fixed on Gabriela. Beautiful, beautiful Gabriela, please be what you say you are but the more
thought I gave it, the more likely it seemed that she was working for the Americans. Perhaps she
had been paid to pass me the memo. There were so many unanswered questions but the answers
might be revealed if we could track down Anne’s mysterious contact.
After about an hour Brenda came back in.
‘I’ve checked every American Carrier for three weeks earlier and I have checked every destination
Airport and there has never been a Caldicot on any of the manifests.’
‘OK. Let us try a different tack. It is only a guess but I would think he didn’t hang around so may
have flown back to the USA a couple of days later.’
