be happy with what you have already given me. Al least I know what he looks like now.’

Checking photos was agonisingly slow but we soon got into a rhythm and after an hour, we were

‘Eureka! Here he is. He obviously does have more than one passport. Arrived 13 March as Stepan
Chernetsky. Looking at the time he passed through control I would say he came in on the Moscow

charter flight. I will print this out and look at the Transaero Airlines manifest. Yes here we are he
was on their manifest. I will just check there inbounds around that date. Yes, there we are. It was a
fleeting visit to Moscow, less than twenty four hours.’

I thanked Simon and searched out Alexander.

‘Get what you were looking for Bryant?’

‘Yes thank you. You were right. Simon was a whizz.

I rang Brenda.

‘Bren. Get me on the first JFK flight tomorrow, return same evening strictly QT. Pay with my credit
card, you have the details still, good. Strictly private business, no diplomatic bag for hardware and
can you get the tickets and Michael Hagley’s Assist details round to my apartment with one of our
couriers. Oh! And also can you send round a miniature tape recorder, one of those memo
recorders.’

‘Yes, no problem and you have received a reply to your coded signal. I’ve decoded it and you’re

absolutely right, the voice from the grave says his driving licence is clean.’

‘Good. It also confirms Hagley’s ghost is living in the apartment.’
