About the Author
Mary Moore Dabney Thomson was born in North Carolina in 1886. She was the daughter of a former University of Cincinnati president. Although she was not a college graduate herself, her education was more informal with private tutoring, and she continued learning new things her entire life.
She was the seventh president of Western College, an all-girls school, from 1941-1945.
She was also chairman of its board of trustees from 1947-1952. The college named a dormitory after her –Thomson Hall – in recognition of her long service to
the college.
When a student proclaimed, “Mrs. Thomson, you’re trying to make this a finishing school,” she replied, “Yes, I’m not finished learning and I don’t believe you are.”
Although her husband passed away in 1939 leaving her to raise their five children alone,
she was nominated for “Mother of the Year” in 1942.
These were the war years and Victory Gardens were planted. The girls learned to use
marionettes and traveled throughout the United States giving shows. Six-week summer
 courses were started.
