Psalm 77. The truth of Psalm 77:19 is not power. It is mystery. In
other words, God’s ways in your life like footprints in water may not be
known. You do not know what He is doing in your life, and I do not
know what He is doing in my life. He does not leave footprints. I know
it is Him, but I do not know what He is doing. God moves in a
        mysterious way. Remember that poem?

“God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform.”

In that connection, let me give you Psalm 42:7

        “Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls;
All Your breakers and Your waves have rolled over me.”

Now that is quite a figure of speech. It is a personification. That is when
you give something inanimate the qualities of a real person. The
psalmist is describing the waves as if they were alive and as if they were
talking. “Deep calls to deep.” It is picturing an experience where there
        is no let-up.

Now have you had a time in your life when one thing seems to happen
after the other. We say, when it rains it pours. You have this quick
succession of calamities and there does not seem to be any let- up
whatsoever. You lose your job, and you get sick, and the kids get sick,
and the dog runs away, and the roof caves in, and so on. Everything all
at once. God’s breakers rolling over you one after another.

We were here in Newport Rhode Island and we had a hurricane. I forget
what the name was. I went down to Second Beach because I wanted to
see the hurricane, and I decided to go swimming. Yeah, I know, that
was pretty dumb. Praise God, my first born son was with me. I might
have drowned without him. But, anyway, I was out there and I began
living this Psalm, “Deep calls unto deep,” and one wave hit me and then
“deep calls to deep” and, Boom! Another wave hit me, and I could not
get up, and I was falling down and getting beaten up. And then, one
wave said “deep calls to deep”, and I got caught in the undertow and
going down fast. I was fighting and praying that God would save me. I
couldn’t get my bearings but God sent a wave that day and it threw me
right onto the beach. Boy did I praise the Lord for that!

That is what He is talking about. When one wave after another just
knocks you down, and you get up and try to get your balance and another
one comes, and another one comes, and another one comes, and then
        takes you out,
