book becomes awfully fresh. Blessed is the man who is separated unto
the Lord, who delights in the Lord. That is the direction of his heart. It
is not being driven by fear or by some hope of gain. It is a delight. He
chooses. He sets his heart upon the Lord.
I think, and I fear, that for thousands of Christians their whole view of
the Christian life is separated from. They have missed the key to the
whole thing. Separated unto the Lord Himself. Choosing not to be
involved in certain worldly things might come, but I will tell you, if you
are not knowing the Lord, what good is it to be separated from anything?
The Christian life is, just knowing the Lord.
In verse 2 it says, “And in His law he meditates day and night.” It is
being one who has set his heart on the Lord. I love the Hebrew word for
meditate. In our Occidental (Western) society, we do not do what they
do in the Oriental (Eastern) society. They meditate. The word meditate
actually means to moan or to hum or to murmur. In other words, they
did it out loud.
They would come across a verse and walk down the street going
hmmmm. Even today I am told they meditate out loud, and hum as they
ponder these truths. The word in Hebrew is to ruminate, to chew the
cud, to masticate it. So the man that is blessed has his delight in the
Lord! He is separated unto the Lord! Yes, from certain things, but the
blessing does not come from separation. Life flows from union with the
Lord. Delighting in the truth of God! Day and night you will pick him
out because he is murmuring. Not grumbling. He delights in the Lord,
and he delights in the revealed will of the Lord illustrated by the law.
Psalm 1 is addressed to such a person. Psalm 1 is saying: Do you want
to know what this book is all about? It is about the fullness of blessing.
Do you want to know who gets it? The person who has set his heart to
delight in the Lord. That is the one who gets blessed and has fullness of
blessings.
3: Only grace can bring this kind of blessing, and that is the third point.
Not only is it blessednesses, not only is it for someone who has set
himself to delight in the Lord, but it includes grace as the source of
everything in life.
For a while I was pastoring a little church and we butted heads with some
of the deacons and so called leaders. As the Lord began opening my
eyes I came to see that all true Christian activity comes as a byproduct of
drinking from His grace. But they wanted to do this and do that. They
