figure, but actually makes it a little stronger. Deuteronomy 32:10 says,
“He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of a
wilderness; He encircled him, He cared for him, He guarded
him as the apple of His eye.”
That is a little different. You see, Psalms 17 says, “The apple of the
eye.” Deuteronomy 32 says, “The apple of His eye.” In Deuteronomy it
says eagle’s wings but in Psalm 17 it says “His wings”. What is the
precious truth that God is desiring to communicate? “Keep me as the
apple of the eye.” “Hide me in the shadow of Your wings.” Zechariah
2:8 says, “He who touches you, touches the apple of His eye.” Isn’t
that awesome? What is God’s illustration?
Physically, scholars tell us that the word “apple” is not a fruit. He is not
talking about plums and peaches and bananas and apples. The apple of
the eye is the “pupil of the eye”. It comes from a word which means the
“daughter of the eye”. Some say it is “the little man of the eye”. If I
were to come real close to you and just stare into your eyes, what would I
see? And the answer is I would see a little man. I would see me.
Because the eye is like a mirror if you look in someone’s eye you see
yourself.
I call attention to that because I hope you are accustomed to looking, to
focusing, to gazing, in God’s eye. If you gaze in God’s eye, what do you
see? You see yourself, because you are always in His eye, and I am
always in His eye, and He always has us on His heart. The eye is one of
the most indispensable parts of the body, and the pupil of the eye is one
of the most indispensable parts of the eye. II Corinthians 3:18,
“But we all, with open face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the
Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by
the Spirit of the Lord.”
Look at what God has done in His creation, our wise Creator, in making
the eye. Nothing is more protective in your whole body than the eye.
God has given you eyelids. Little doors that open and close to soften the
light and to let in just enough light. Not only has God given you eyelids,
but He has given you eyelashes. Your eyelashes are not just to make
your eyes pretty. Your eyelashes are designed by God to protect the eye,
to keep out the dust and to keep out the insects. Not only has He given
you eyelids and eyelashes, He has given you eyebrows. An eyebrow is
like a little canopy over your eyes to protect it from the sweat that runs
down your forehead so it won’t get in your eyes.
