glory in the Church and in Jesus Christ to all generations
forever and ever. Amen”
The way to enter into the meat of this, is to study it as an
effective way to pray for other Christians. The prayers of Paul in
Philippians, Ephesians and Colossians are called “The prison
prayers”. The value of these prayers lie in the fact that they are
the Holy Spirit’s inspired answer to the question, “How can I pray
effectively for myself, and other Christians?”
When you study these prayers, you will be convicted. So much of
my praying is superficial. It’s amazing how foundational these
prayers are. We pray something like this, “Dear Lord, please pat
so and so on the back, and do away with his discouragement.”
Paul never prayed that. “Bless him Lord,” (even if he doesn’t want
to be blessed). That’s how we pray. “Deliver him, Lord,” (even if
he doesn’t want to be delivered). “Please take away all his
problems, and pay his bills”. The Apostle Paul wouldn’t pray that
in a million years. His prayers rest on inspired ground, and we
can learn a lot by taking a look at them. Paul’s concern that every
Christian cash in on his inheritance, was so great, that he
dropped to his knees and began to pray. Let me show three
principles that I get from this prayer and song.
Understanding the facts, will give you one or two applications. But
when you find the principle, the applications become unlimited.
Let me state the first one, and then we’ll discuss it.
Always trust God to over-answer your prayers.
See, if you read the Bible carefully, you are going to find this; that
God has not promised to answer your prayers. You won’t find a
place in the Bible, where He has promised to answer your
prayers! No, He has promised to over-answer your prayers.
