MAKING MEMORIES
The methods used by inventors, scientists and artists to create products and masterpieces is a journey. They’ll venture down many paths and change their direction of focus as their projects progress. But these changes of approach and the decision making process behind them are basic life skills. So, while our pupils work hard in the DTI Studio to create a mechanical toy or a clock or an electric circuit, they have gathered information, planned, problem-solved, collaborated and made important decisions along the way.
DTI didn’t wane during lockdown. Our pupils looked forward to their lessons enormously and, amongst other topics they studied from home, they learnt about the properties of materials, used 3D design software to create ‘The Perfect House’, drew stunning secret agent outfits and made model monsters using recycled materials.
Year 3 created designs to specific themes, explored different materials and used tools to make lunar rovers which were tested and modified to fulfil the
specification. The children also made mechanical toys and learnt about cranks, cams and different types of motion.
Year 4 children made precious item containers by designing 2D nets and then making 3D boxes.Their skill level using sewing machines to make drawstring bags was mind-boggling!
Year 5 worked in teams on a
range of projects, based on civil and aeronautical engineering, to create gliders and bridges. In the summer term, the pupils studied the work of Charles
Rennie Macintosh and designed clocks in his style on a computer which were then laser cut.
Years 6 learnt about electrical components and were given real-life problems to resolve with a timer circuit. They created mind-maps to solve the problems and went on to make circuits in areas including games, cooking, sharing and household activity timers.
Year 7 learnt about new and smart materials before producing pencil cases using conductive thread. They went on
