St Andrew’s Prep aims for each of its pupils to leave the school with happy memories of sport and children eager to continue playing in the future, regardless of ability. Success does not mean winning; success means enjoying the experience and learning. There is an activity for every child here – be it on the pitches or in the sports hall - and we take seriously the focus on skill development rather than match play, building confidence in every participant across all sports and all abilities.
Our PE programme lays down the foundation of movement capability, establishing a clear understanding of the value and impact of exercise. Pupils develop their fundamental skills and fitness from an early age and with our state-of-the-art Goodwin Sports Hall, they take part in orienteering, gymnastics, athletics, parkour and theYouth Sports Leadership award. Our 20m indoor swimming pool allows pupils to have weekly time-tabled lessons and we also provide an extensive co- curricular programme too. Our dance studio is home to regular ballet, jazz, zumba, HIIT (high intensity interval training) and boxercise sessions.
As we continued to work through and adapt with changing COVID restrictions, our online provision in the spring term included a variety of sport specific fitness and fundamental skills ideas. We listened to our parents, both home and abroad, who requested these sessions to be flexible, and so offered weekly pre-recorded Netfit and Hockfit videos for Years 5 to 8. For our younger pupils, we provided pre-recorded videos and live sessions which kept their fundamental skills going. We also set personal exercise programmes and fundamental skill challenges which pupils could opt in to if they wanted.
Many of our sports scholars opted in to extension work too which included investigating leadership skills and role models in sport. We also teamed up with specialist staff at Eastbourne College who lead sessions in developing core strength, netball, hockey and rugby sessions and the Power of 30.
