SKILLS
No matter what sport Video demonstrations, oral
you enjoy, there
are always ways to improve your abilities.
Whether on land or on the water, quality instruction using top-of-the-line equipment is essential.
It’s not enough that your instructors do the sport
well: they also need to be
well versed in the different ways people learn, say Andy Milovanovic and Robbie McMillin, owners of Muskoka Wake Wakeboarding School.
“Everyone has their own learning style, a blend of visual, auditory and kinesthetic or hands-on teaching that suits them best,” explains Andy. “Good instructors need to know all of these, and be able to adapt their lessons to suit the students.”
No matter how you learn, he adds, the best advice is to relax. “Have fun improving your skills as you learn to balance, develop new tricks and progress.”
Well maintained, high-
end equipment is equally important for teaching, says Andy. Muskoka Wake uses Yahama Waverunners for flyboard lessons, and all their Malibu Boats are brand new every season.
“Having a well-trained staff using the best equipment available will lead to better learning – and more fun – for our students,” says Andy.
Kids Camps
New this year, Muskoka
discussions, dryland training and practicing on the
water are all used to teach wakeboarding, wakesurfing and flyboarding.
Another way to maximize
your learning can be to
work with several different instructors. Each teacher and student have their own way of communicating and learning. A series of well-trained instructors can ensure each learner’s needs are met, particularly if all the teachers are versed in the same approaches.
“If you’re taking lessons three days in a row, your progression continues no matter who your instructor is,” says Robbie.
Wake is offering weekday kids camps. A maximum of eight spots are available each week as the camps run from 9 a.m. to noon daily. Each day features a different wake sport. There is even a day when the campers choose the activity.
Muskoka Wake hopes to encourage new connections between the campers and their families. Andy and Robbie became friends
on the lakes because of
a mutual love for wake sports. They partnered
seven years ago to launch Muskoka Wake. They began partnering with Gordon Bay Marina in 2017 and now have locations on Lake of Bays,
Lake Joseph, Lake Muskoka and Lake Rosseau.
Watersport lessons, camps and entertainment provide more than lessons. The highly social activities are great opportunities to bond with family and friends all summer long.
“All of our lifelong friendships were made on
the water,” says Andy. “We want to share that feeling
of camaraderie, fun and excitement with our students so they can begin and nurture great relationships of their own.” DS
