MIC HIGAN Have you seen these guys
HARBO R racing around the lake
and wonder
“What’s that bass fishing
all about?”
hese guys love the competition...and the money and
prizes aren’t too bad either.
I spoke with National Director Jack Horning of the
National Bass Anglers Association. Mr. Horning
described Lake St. Clair as “One of the top Small-
mouth Bass fishing lakes in the world. There are
a lot of bass caught over 5 pounds and now we are
seeing more fish in the 6 and 7 pound range!”
NBAA hosts over 1200 bass tournaments a year.
These events are held on over 250 lakes in nine
states. In Michigan alone NBAA has over 75 divi-
sions.
On Lake St. Clair, bass season opens the third
Saturday in June. Once the season is open, NBAA
hosts a weekly tournament each Tuesday night until
the end of September. There are also weekend
events, including the “Sunday St. Clair Series” and
the “Double Barrel St. Clair Shootout Challenge.”
All the NBAA events are held at the Harley Ensign
Launch Ramp, located at the mouth of the Clinton
River at the end of South River Road (see page 25
for map).
On June 16, NBAA will hold the 2nd annual “St.
Clair Open”. This special tournament is open
to everyone. You don’t have to be a member of
NBAA; but you must abide by NBAA rules. There
will be cash prizes paid out for the top finishers and
a special raffle for all participants. A $150 entry fee
is required.
The NBAA has rules governing the events posted
on their website. Briefly, for some background on
the weekly tournaments, there are some basic rules.
Safety is a number one priority.
