INDOOR STORAGE in Ecorse for years getting rusty, was towed away last fall.
As reported previously, the Columbia was awarded to
a New York non-profit group. Once restored, the group
plans to put her to work in New York as an education re-
source, a cultural venue and museum, and to provide reg-
ular excursions visiting the Hudson River and New York’s
harbor.
The 2nd boat, SS Ste. Claire was purchased locally by
Maximus Corporation and they are hoping to restore the
steamer to bring it back to us on the Detroit River.
The two boats, Columbia and Ste. Clair (1902 & 1920),
are the only two remaining turn of the century excursion
steamships in existence. Columbia is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places. She is 200’ long and carried
roughly 2500 passengers back and forth to Boblo Island
(Bois Blanc Island) amusement park on the Detroit River.
The Columbia is no longer in Detroit
