Tips on Keeping Spiders

            Off of Your Boat

A friend of ours has a beautifully restored
classic wooden Lyman. Her boat has a hard
top, and is always completely covered with
canvas, however, the spiders were still getting
inside. This past year, she sprayed the boat
and lines with “spider and bug” spray, which
is the same chemical from a local home store
that you would use around the outside of your
house. She also spread dryer sheets around

the inside of the cockpit area. Everything
          smelled nice, and...no spiders!

Do you get bored holding your cocktail Page 13
        while standing in the water?

I don't usually get bored fast, but for those two people
who get bored, please read on. The wonderful thing
about water is that it gives you natural resistance with

                                    absolutely no impact to your
                                    joints. For those with arthri-
tis or joint problems, it of-
                                    fers the perfect alternative
                                    to lifting weights.

                                            When you are sub-
                                    merged in water at waist
                                    level, the impact of walking
on your body is half as much
as on land and it's only one-
tenth as much when the wa-
ter is up to your shoulders.

You really can tone up in the
water (and not just your right arm). Just like weight
training, your muscles are working against resistance,
becoming stronger with each workout. Water offers
roughly 10 times more resistance to motion than air
does, forcing you to work harder to move through it.
That allows you to burn more calories and get a bet-
ter aerobic workout than from similar "dry" exercises.
You can get comparable benefits from a shorter work-
out because water provides resistance in all directions,
therefore you exercise multiple muscles during the same
exercise. For example, straight-leg lifts on land tone
only the front thigh muscle. But leg lifts in the water
also strengthen the hamstrings, at the back of the thigh,
as you force your leg "down."

The cooling, stimulating effect of the water, plus the re-
duced strain on your joints, may also encourage you to
work out harder or longer. Here are a few simple ex-
ercise ideas to help you burn those extra calories while
 you're standing around your boat.
