How chords are written on a chart.

There are a few aspects needed to write chords down on a chart and also
necessary, the ability to read them aswell.

Chord boxes are diagrams

horizontal line is the nut,
unless a higher fret
number is indicated and
the vertical lines are the
strings in order
from left to right:

Illustrated is the chord of:
‘A’ or ‘A Major’,
as we have seen
in the previous page
You may see in some books: ‘x’ and ‘o’ above the nut and strings, just as in this
example.
The ‘x’ means that you shouldn’t include that string when strumming or picking.
The ‘o’ means open string. No fingers are placed on that string.
