3. GET THE CHILDREN INTO A CIRCLE: ‘Let’s Make a Circle’ by Anne Porter Without speaking, get the children into a circle by singing:
Let’s make a circle,
A circle a circle.
Let’s make a circle,
At insert child’s name’s birthday party.
Repeat until everyone is in a circle. Please use this song every time you need the children in a circle throughout the duration of the party.
4. WISHING SONG: ‘Starlight Starbright’ by Traditional
“Let’s see what I have in my sparkly magic bag today.” Reveal magic wand. “What’s this? What does a magic wand do? Today I’m going to show you how we can use it to make all of our wishes come true. You can wish for anything like a real fairy, a magic wand or even a giant chocolate cake! First you need to learn the special wishing song and it goes like this.” Point your wand to different children to the pulse as you sing the song acapella.
All:
Starlight, starbright,
First star I see tonight.
Wish I may, wish I might, Have this wish I wish tonight.
You: Birthday girl/boy, (insert child’s name) what’s your wish?
(you may need to give some suggestions)
Child: I wish for a fairy. (the child invents their own wish)
You: (spoken) Now, let’s all say “One, two, three abracadabra”!
All (spoken): One, two three, abracadabra! (the children wave their imaginary wands)
Repeat several times as above, except for at the end of each verse when you ask the children to put their hand up if they would like to make a wish. You then sing “Hello, what’s your wish?” to a child that has their hand up. If you have more than ten children, you could try asking a few children at a time (at the end of each verse before saying “one, two, three abracadabra”) to speed up the activity. If you have more than 20 children you can ask everyone that hasn’t had a turn to shout their wish out at once.
5. CHOREOGRAPHED DANCE ONE: ‘Fairy Ballet’ performed by The Fairies
Click on song name to open the video in YouTube.
“It’s time to learn a special fairy dance.” Go through the tricky moves then play the track and perform the dance as in the video.
6. PARACHUTE ACTIVITY WITH TOY/S ON TOP: ‘You Will See Her Fly’ by Lucy Milan Davis (sung to the traditional tune of ‘Pop Goes the Weasel’)
“Let’s see who’s hiding in my sparkly magic bag.” Reveal soft fairy toy. “Can anyone tell me why she has wings? Let’s see if we can use the parachute to make her fly. But first we must practice with the imaginary one.” Sing the song and perform the actions described below with the imaginary parachute.
The fairy is so very small, (holding the parachute and walking around in a circle)
She’s quiet and she’s shy. (as above)
But if you stand very still, (still and singing quietly)
You will see her fly! (sing loudly and lift the parachute up high, flinging the toy into the air)
Sing the song and perform the actions with the real parachute. Place the fairy toy on top and perform the actions as you sing the song. Repeat several times. Tell the children that the fairy is feeling lonely and so place up to nine other soft toys on top and repeat.
