                                                       Pest Prevention



                           Design & Construction Standards Guide



                                         For Project Managers and Approved Contractors

                                                                         Pests are attracted to food premises for a
                                                                         number of reasons including:

                                                                              food sources (food stock and food in
                                                                               customer / trade waste)
                                                                              harborage (the opportunity to enter
                                                                               and places to live)
                           1 Identify Risks                                   warmth
                                                                         Good design and construction plays an
                                                                         important role in pest prevention.
                                                                         This document identifies risk points and design
                                                                         / construction standards to control pests.

                                           Factors leading to ‘HIGH RISK’ categorisation of sites:

                                                Open Watercourses - on or very close to site
                                                Waste land, refuse sites, sewage works, railway embankment, or similar - adjacent
                                                 or very close
                                                Some inner city commercial locations, for example London / Manchester /
                        Risk Factors
                                                 Birmingham
                                                Close to other businesses with poor external hygiene standards
                                                Sites with existing or previous relevant infestation problems
                                           Other locations are regarded as ‘STANDARD RISK’


                                           On confirmation of development project, engagement with local Operations Teams and
                                           the allocated pest prevention company will prevent / reduce potential pest activity at a
                                           later date.

                                                Engage with the Operations Team regarding approved / appointed pest
                                                 contractor.
                        Guidance and Advice      Engage with Pest contractor to attend pre-start meeting.
                                                Risk analysis of local area / environment.
                                                Discuss proposed completion date.
                                                Organise pest company review following completion during snagging period.
