We were slaves in Egypt and the Lord freed us from Egypt with a mighty hand. Had not the Holy one liberated
our people from Egypt, then we, our children and our children's children would still be enslaved. And even if
we were all wise, all insightful, all older, all well-versed in Torah, it would still be a Mitzvah for us to recite
the story of the Exodus from Egypt. And whoever increases their telling of the Exodus from Egypt is
         praiseworthy.

         Avadim Hayinu ‐ Netanela Carrasso

What was slavery like for the Jews in Egypt? Bnei Israel were enslaved for 210 years because at first the Egyp-
tians were nice to the Jews. As time passed, Egyptians took advantage of the Jewish people and in a short time
Bnei Israel became slaves for 210 years. As slaves, Jews were forced to do pointless labor. An example of the
pointless labor was to lift and move stones and boulders. The slaves were also used to build houses and public
buildings. A lesson that you can learn from Avadim Hayinu is not to take advantage of first time impressions. If
someone shows you one color, that doesn't mean that that's their true color. At first, the Egyptians were nice to
Bnei Israel, and the next thing you know, the Jews are slaves in Egypt.
