Why Is G‐d Referred To As “HaMakom (The Place)”? ‐

The Midrash explains that we use the term Baruch HaMakom for G-d because “He is the place of the universe
and the universe is not His place.” G-d is not limited by space, or encompassed by it. Rather He encompasses
everything, and therefore is present everywhere. We also praise Him as the giver of the Torah. In the Torah we
find the guidance we need for dealing with the various kinds of children about whom we are about to speak.
The phrase “Baruch Hu”, Blessed is He, which comes after the phrase ”Baruch HaMakom”, has been explained
as a response to the leader of the Seder. The custom in olden days was for him to intone, Baruch HaMakom,
“Blessed is the Ever-Present” and the participants would respond in unison, Baruch Hu, “Blessed is He”. These
are the reasons we commemorate G-d as Baruch HaMakom.
