One might think that the Haggadah should be recited on the first day of the month of Nisan, but the Torah
says: "You shall tell your son on that day" [the first day of Passover]. One might think that the phrase on that
day means that the story of the Exodus should be recited in the daytime; therefore, the Torah says: "This is on
account of what the Lord did for me." The word this refers to the time when this matzo and this marror are
placed before you - on Passover night when you are obliged to eat them.

It All Starts With Pesach ‐ Mrs. Esther Saghian & Mrs. Rivkie Gottlieb

The first Mitzvah that Bnei Yisrael were given as a nation was the Mitzvah of Chodesh - calendar. This was a
significant Mitzvah as it symbolized the start of freedom, a slave has no control over his/her time, but here Ha-
shem is giving them this control.
In the Torah the calendar of months begins with Chodesh Nissan, making Pesach the first holiday of the year.
How we start the year has an effect on the coming months and we can see this with the days of Pesach and the
" "ש''ב ת''אsystem (where the letters of the Aleph Bet can be interchanged with each other in the order of first =
last, second = second to last etc.
