“No.”
“I saw you and a French soldier on the picture.”
“He is one of the technical advisers in my battalion.”
“Did he kill the Vietnamese people?” In an emotion,
Nguyen asked.
Trung-Thanh looked at his son in his surprise.
“Why did you ask me about that thing?”
“Because, I saw French soldiers killing the people in our
village two years ago, and they kill uncle Hung too.”
Trung-Thanh held his son to console him and said.
“It is the war. The soldiers were always blind in the order of
their commander.”
“Do you shoot at the people like French soldiers too?”
“No, if I do it. It was on the battlefield only and when I
fought with Vietminh to defense.”
Nguyen father shook his head and said in a low voice.
Nguyen looked at his father with the moist eyes.
“Do Vietminh want to kill you?”
“Yes; They want to do it! So I must kill them to defend and
survive.”
“Nguyen.” The echoing voice of Nguyen’s mother came
from the kitchen.
“Yes. Mom.”
