Youthmark Awards
Congratula ons to the following students who received a pres gious Youthmark Award in 2018. These awards are funded by the ILT with the purpose of recognising Southland students who excel in the academic, spor ng and cultural arenas.
Fi y awards are given out each year and all Southland secondary schools are allocated
a number of awards based on their Year 13 roll numbers. This year Southland Boys’ High School was allocated the following 5 awards.
Haven, a na ve bird hospital in Otatara, where he helps care for injured birds. In late 2016, he began working on se ng up a pest control programme at Thomson’s Bush to control rats, possums, stoats and hedgehogs. This involved mee ngs with the Invercargill City Council, Parks and Recrea on and Environment Southland. Daniel has secured, through the Omaui Land Care Group, over 100 traps for the school to use.
Daniels’ volunteer work has also led him
to involve the students of Southland Boys’ High School in the community, by se ng up a weed control programme at the nearby Thomson’s Bush. This was achieved by working with the school Science Club to get students interested in the environment.
In 2019, Daniel plans to a end Otago University where he will study Zoology and possibly Ecology with a view to pursuing a career with the Department of Conserva on.
at Southland Boys’ High School. In Years 8, 9 and 10, Corbin was the Southland Boys’ High School Speech Champion. He gained overall Excellence endorsement in Level
1 and overall Merit endorsement in Level 2. Corbin was the recipient of the Best All Round Year 12 Student award.
Corbin has played many sports for Southland Boys’ High School including
the U15 Tournament rugby team. He has been a Southland rugby representa ve and captained the South Island U48 rugby team and the New Zealand Marist Rugby team.
From 2016 Corbin’s focus switched to cycling where he has achieved sixteen Na onal  tles and is currently ranked Number 1 in the World for the U19 Omnium event.
At the 2018 Oceania Track Cycling Championships, Corbin won Oceania  tles in the Omnium, Individual Pursuit and Madison events. Corbin won a bronze medal in the Team’s Pursuit at the Junior World Championships in Italy in 2017. Also in 2017 Corbin won both the Junior and Senior Sportsperson of the Year
in the Southland Secondary Schools’ compe  on.
In 2019, Corbin will study Law and Business at Massey University, whilst being part of the New Zealand
Track Team.
Joshua
Burnett
Flynn

School, Joshua
has contributed
to the life of the
school as well
as maintaining
an impressive
academic record
and an interna onal spor ng reputa on. Joshua is a role model for leadership for
the younger students in his posi on as a Peer Support Mentor. He was awarded a Spor ng Blue and an Academic Blue in 2017. Joshua also achieved overall Excellence endorsements in both Levels 1 and 2.
As a passionate bike rider, Joshua has raced BMX for 10 years. In 2015, he transi oned to racing mountain bikes. In 2018, Joshua placed second at the Na onal Cross-country Championships and placed  rst at the Na onal Secondary Schools’ Championships in Rotorua.
Joshua has been selected for the New Zealand 2018 World Championships team to compete in Switzerland in 2018.
Joshua intends to study Law at the University of Otago whilst pursuing his dream of becoming a professional mountain biker.
Sinclair
Flynn has excelled in spor ng and academic arenas during his  me at Southland Boys’ High School. He
gained General
Excellence in Year 10 and achieved Level 1 with
an Excellence endorsement
and Level 2 with Merit. Flynn was named Best All Round Student in Year 11.
Flynn achieved
a New Zealand Triathlon  tle in 2016 as a member of the Southland Boys’ High School team and has twice placed in the top six in the Individual event at Na onal level.
In 2018 Flynn gained fourth place in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Open Water Championships. He has won the Across Lake Te Anau Swim in the open category twice and is the current record holder. Flynn is the current record holder for the Ruby Island Pro Elite Swim, winning the event in 2017. Flynn has been a Southland Swimming Representa ve since 2012 and set a new South Island record as part of the Southland Relay team. He has mul ple South Island  tles.
Flynn is going to study Engineering at the University of Canterbury and con nue with swimming and
mul sport.
Sean

School, Daniel’s passion for the environment has grown and he has become an ac ve par cipant in the community through his volunteer work with environmental groups.

Sean excels in
sport, leadership
and academic
arenas. For the
last  ve years he
has represented
the Southland
Boys’ High School in 1st XI Hockey, 1st
XI Cricket and the 1st XV Rugby teams. Sean represented Southland in all three
of these spor ng codes and was a part of the Southland Men’s Development Cricket team as well as the Southland Hawke Cup squad. He has also represented Southland in cricket and rugby since 2012.
Sean has played both cricket and rugby at Na onal level, being part of the Southland Boys’ High School 1st XV team to make the rugby Top 4 Championships in 2016/2017, and the Otago U17 cricket team in 2017/2018, which placed second in the Na onal tournament in 2017.
Sean became a Prefect in 2018, as well as Head Boarder and Prefect of Coldstream Hostel. He was also the captain of the 1st XI Cricket team and 1st XV Rugby team. Sean demonstrates tukana teina as a Year 7 Maths Tutor and coach for the Year 7/8 Baby Blues rugby team. He gained overall Merit endorsement in Levels 1 and 2.
In 2019, Sean plans to study Sport Science and Performance Analysis at the University of Canterbury, whilst furthering his spor ng career with his focus being rugby.
