JUNIOR SCHOOL
This year has been another busy year with boys being involved in a lot of di erent opportuni es across the Curriculum.
The year started o with the Year 7 cohort being introduced to a stalwart of the Southland Boys’ Calendar with Sports
Day! Some descrip ons given were, “Spectacular!”, “Colourful!”, and, “...the
only me you are going to be a Smurf for
a day!” The boys embraced the day with some great costumes and head to toe paint. Many boys quali ed for the Southland Boys’ Championship Day to be held the following week. We had six Junior School students who broke Southland Boys’ records on Championship Day and that was followed by eleven boys taking rst place in their event at Southland Primary Schools’ Athle cs.
YEAR 7 TRIP TO RIVERTON
Polyfest and SingOut Choir are
always highlights on the school calendar and this year did not disappoint. We were honoured to have a small group of Year 8 boys (Blake, Pa ni, Mai , Tasi, Tyler-Toni and Jayden) represent the Junior School
at the annual Polyfest. The boys delivered an outstanding performance. Sing Out was also great and this year we had some Junior School students also join in with the senior choir, which was a great opportunity for them.
Both year levels were lucky enough to have their annual Camps this year, with the Year 7 students o to Borland Lodge in Term 2 and the Year 8 students making the trek into Deep Cove in Term 3. All the students who a ended camps thoroughly enjoyed them and it was great to hear about their experiences on their return. Camps are such a great opportunity for the boys to experience di erent things and get outside of their comfort zone. The Year 7 classes were lucky to have members of the Year
13 Outdoor Educa on class join in on their camps and this added another element of the ‘older looks a er younger’ philosophy of the school. I would like to make a special men on to all the parents who came along on the camps, as without your support the camps would not run.
On the Sports Calendar the students always look forward to our summer and winter inter-school with Balmacewen Intermediate from Dunedin. Both inter-schools involve approximately 60 students and it is something everyone gets excited and compe ve about. During the summer
inter-school the boys compete in
Touch, Water Polo, Tennis and Cricket and the winter Inter-school involves Basketball, Football, Rugby and Hockey. It is always a tough compe on and a great xture for the students to get involved in and give them a taster of senior school inter-school’s to be involved in, in the future.
Throughout the year boys have also had the chance to compete in SMAC Maths (where we had 8 teams from the Junior School), ICAS Exams (English and Maths) and Chess. It is great to see a large number of boys wan ng to par cipate in these events.
During the Term 3 holidays we had a large number of boys head away to Sports Tournaments where they were represen ng Southland: Hockey, Football, Basketball, Rugby League and Rugby. All of these boys did extremely well and we had the following boys named in South Island Rugby Teams: Jerome Buckley, Ethan Brock, Thomas Jennings, Jak Morton and Adam Hair.
Jak was also named the Southland Rugby Under 48kg Player of the Year.
Over the year we have had boys compete in a huge variety of sports from the mainstream Cricket, Basketball, Rugby
right through to Mountain Biking, Track Cycling, Taekwondo and Chess. It is great to see the boys ge ng involved in such a variety of sports and it is awesome to see how many of them are going on to excel
in their chosen code, through dedica on, perseverance and talent. We are extremely proud of the boys and it is great to have the chance to celebrate these successes at our Assemblies regularly.
