of massive structures and parking areas are dotted
            around Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

            • At Gateway, north of Durban, a novel way was used
to clad the steel structures up to three-storey high
patterned concrete panels were poured in forms next
to the steel columns and subsequently tipped up
and fastened in place. This method has been quite
effective, fast and economical and provides a pleasing

and glass domes dominating the sky line on the N3
towards Durban. The dome structures remind one of
the large influences of the Indian community on this
province to which they were brought as sugar cane
              labourers in the early 1900s.
