find there is no greater joy than that from a child who has cultivated
plants in his or her own vegetable garden.
● A picture is worth a thousand words. Never tell kids something
you could show them.
When choosing your garden spot
● Make it easily accessible for children but also where they can
be viewed by others.
● Make sure it gets at least 6 hours of sunlight.
● Find a spot that is somewhat sheltered and out of the wind.
A fun project to do while you are tracking the sun (letting you know how
much sun a certain spot will get) is to make up a sundial. Here’s two simple
methods for making a Sundial.
Materials
- stick
- rocks or chalk
- 1 cup of playdough (optional)
- watch or clock
Find your sunny spot.
Put the stick in the ground. If it is a sidewalk or patio, put the stick
in the playdough and use that to hold the stick upright on cement.
Throughout the day, place a rock, or mark with chalk for each hour
indicating where the shadow falls at that time.
Now your sundial is ready to use. When you want to tell the time,
just look for the shadow.
