School’s Context
Parktown Boys High School is located at Parktown 20 Wellington Road, in a suburban
area. The area is safe for learners and there is no evidence of criminal activities that might
hinder teaching and learning. There are surveillance cameras outside the school, within
the school and inside the classrooms. It is one of the oldest schools in the area although
the school is old, the buildings are all still in good condition. Adequate classrooms, fully
furnished with necessary resources that promote effective teaching and learning
however, the entire school structure is not inclusive of learners with physical disabilities
for example learners who utilize wheelchairs for movement. The school lacks ramps.
The school has its own “DNA” (etiquette) which highlights what is expected from learners
in terms of their behavior, values and attitudes within the school, it also outlines how they
must treat their peers, how to address their educators and how they are supposed to be
dressed in their uniform including their hairstyles. As a result of this the school is very
cultured. The school embraces the Forth Industrial Revolution (4IR) through integration
of technology within the classroom, it also promotes the caring pedagogy between the
staff, learners and parents. The school recognizes diversity in terms of academics, culture
and ethnicity of both the learners and teachers. The school draws its strength from the
different voices of the learners by allowing them the freedom of speech about current
issues and controversial issues going on around them.
