LGBTQ LEADERS
40under40
STEPHANIE ZAPATA
Stephanie Zapata has dedicated her life to teaching sexual health and
reproductive justice. She’s spoken at multiple conferences and coined the
phrase “Professional Unprofessional”. She isn’t your average “leader” but
she’s exactly the kind we need, someone who can combine memes with
history to uplift POC voices.

MAYOR PETE
BUTTIGIEG
Pete Buttigieg - aka Mayor Pete - is the first openly gay Democratic
candidate for United States President. This alone would land him on our
list but his record of public service and advocacy leading up to his Pres-
idential bid also earns him a place in our Class of 2020. As mayor, Pete
worked across the aisle to transform South Bend, IN, into a 21st-century
city and improve people’s everyday lives. Under his leadership, household
income rose by 31 percent. Poverty fell by a third, and unemployment was
cut in half. The city launched a tech education center and brought nearly
$400 million in private investment to downtown. At the same time, Pete
worked to build a South Bend community where every resident could
feel safe and included. He is a new kind of leader committed to helping
people, not in advancing an ideological agenda.
