Sky quickly scanned the area a final time to insure it was okay to leave his perch. He rolled to his right and started disas- sembly of his weapon. He hurriedly threw his necessities into the rucksack and started to run to the exit. He dashed down the stairs skipping in increments of three and four as he could. Run- ning to the end of the block, he was determined to get to the house before the opposition. He wanted to toss the rucksack slowing him considerably, but it wasn’t an option. He came around the corner in a mad dash almost home. He quickly tried to sur- vey the area to determine if it was still secure, as he closed in mere seconds from the door.
Pow! A loud shot echoed in the night.
The bullet hit Sky in the thigh and dragged him tumbling to the ground. The rucksack had unexpectedly knocked the wind out of him along with the pain in his leg. He looked up and started low crawling toward the front door. He gave the coded knock and shifted sideways to draw his handgun.
Jennifer opened the door in shock: “Oh my God!” she cried, kneeling down to see about Sky. “You okay?”
“Don’t worry about me. Just get back inside,” Sky muttered.
