He had a new wife now but knew Anita had left an indelible stamp on his soul. “Yeah, if there was ever such a thing as a human interface that plugged into his mind, hers was it, he reaffirmed riding up the elevator he smiled remembering how she never allowed things to be boring.
“There is no such thing as boring things, only boring people,” she would say.
He often wondered about the strange circumstances surround- ing her death and whether it was drug related. The need for drugs was so great in the U.S. that people would kill for almost nothing to get a fix. Some jerk would rather steal, kill, or take from others than work. He still loved her; he always would. Why did she have to be the victim? That’s why he was doing this, he reminded himself getting off the elevator. It’s for Anita. And finding drugs wasn’t good enough. He had to have the creator, the kingpin. Suddenly Seige realized that the death of one of his men re- minded him of his wife. Under the skin, they were all family, he surmised while wondering how to break the news to Steve’s fam- ily. He would not rest no matter what it cost. If he couldn’t get it done inside the law he would go outside. It would be done, he vowed as he knocked twice on the director’s door, his constitu- tion renewed.
“Come in,” came a voice beyond the door. “Seige! Always a pleasure to see you. Have a seat,” said the director. “We moved in and cleaned up the mess you made. Since we didn’t find any of our guys, I assume Steve was the only casualty. Is that accu- rate?” Matthew asked.
Matthew, as the team called him, was known as a solid cop. Even though he was an FBI agent he was known and respected by the entire task force. His entire career consisted of early pro- motion after promotion, and nobody questioned him because he was known as a risk taker. That’s how he came to be unquestion- ably the director of Task Force Talon. Once the newest designer drug started running rampant, he was the point man for the ini- tiation of the task force.
