close, which he could anticipate. But someone knowing his moves before he made them was too much. Going after the top dog of Blue Heaven had become much more than a full time job. He had to sharpen his focus. Even if he could set a trap for the traitor, how would he find out who he was? Would he start with his men or his boss? And how many of his men suspected him. After all, they were all from different agencies. Is being on a task force considered a job superordinate to loyalty in an agency, he wondered. He didn’t know the answer and didn’t want to specu- late. He didn’t like looking into a cannon with a lit fuse. Last night, outsiders were the enemy. Now it was every damn body: will the real double-crosser please stand up.
Why couldn’t this be just a simple world where there was such a thing as fair play? He dismissed the thought almost as fast as it came to him.
“Boring! Hell, everyone would be thinking and doing the same thing.” He thought.
The idea half made him smile but not for long.
“I don’t care how long it takes, I’ll get through this mask of deception and find out what I want to know.”
Lost in thought, he pulled into the parking lot of his headquar- ters building. Cards came out in preparation for the security measures in the building. The notion of going back into the FBI headquarters made him feel like an outsider. He smiled when he envisioned for- getting what to do with his card to get past security.
Walking into the building brought thoughts of his first wife, Anita. It had been several years since her death, and walking into this building always reminded him of how loving and warm she was. She had once told him that her interface would always be plugged into his computer. She always knew the right thing to say that made you feel she was within you. She seemed to be able to take one look into his eyes and know if he was comfort- able, anxious, or just plain hurting. He couldn’t remember a time he didn’t feel like someone special when she spoke even in an- ger. Even through her anger, her words always told him she was
