○ Chapter 2: ...From a Friend
■ This chapter is called "...From a Friend" because as soon as O'Brien starts torturing him,
Winston never affords to think of him as the true enemy. He even thinks of O'Brien as if
he is a friend, that is protecting him; that he is teaching Winston rather than punishing
him. Despite Winston being tortured by O'Brien, knowing that he is the one that inflicts
pain upon him, that he is the one that controls the level of pain and that he is the true
traitor, he still doesn't see O'Brien as the true enemy.
○ Chapter 3: Crushing Inside-Out
■ This chapter is called "Crushing Inside-Out" because Winston is being physically
tortured in order to be mentally broken. Winston is now is the second part of the
reintegration process: learning, understanding and accepting. To understand the Party's
ideologies Winston need to be constantly inflicted with pain so that he can be
brainwashed and let the new information sink in his mind. He is literally being crushed
inside and outside, especially when O'Brien tells him to see himself in front of the mirror.
O'Brien does that so that Winston can see what his humanity is like, his physical
appearance is nothing compared to his thoughts, his mental instability.
○ Chapter 4: The Fear of Knowing
■ This chapter is called "The Fear of Knowing" because Winston has always opposed the
slogan "Ignorance is Strength", he has always knowing everything about how the Party
works. It has been a bless to know of the Party's manipulations, however, it is not a bless
to know now. When O'Brien asks Winston what he feels for Big Brother, he answers that
he hates to government. When this happens, O'Brien sends him to "Room 101" and
Winston knows what awaits him, he know - and in this case, it only makes it worst to
expect the known cruelty.
○ Chapter 5: Staying Alive
■ This chapter is called "Staying Alive" because the only thing that Winston hadn't done
was betray Julia's love. However, when Winston is in "Room 101", He is faced with the
greatest of his fears. Not even torture had being a situation as exasperating as a cage of
rats in close proximity to his face. Winston avoids the punishment by saying: "Do it to
Julia" (pg. 362) Until now he hadn't really betrayed his love to her, he always cling to that
tiny hope that one day he would see her. For Winston, hope was the only thing stronger
than the fear of torture. This was true until Winston was faced with something even
worse than torture: rats. He reached a point where he could not love Julia anymore. As
soon as Winston is able to forget his love towards Julia, it is possible to make him love
the Party, and inevitably, die loving the government. And as Winston said, "to die hating
them [the Party], that was freedom" (pg. 354), and they won't allow Winston to die hating
them, so betraying Julia's love means that he can now love Big Brother, and die this way.
This all shows how he would rather stay alive than stay human, as he promised that he
would in chapter 7.
