                                                                 On 7  August 1991, born William Taitoko, the multi-
                                                                 talented musician toured the world with the Maori
                                                                 Volcanics Showband in the 1970s. He adopted the
                                                                 stage name Billy T James because Australians could
                                                                 not pronounce his surname correctly. He died of
                                                                 heart failure at 43 years old.

                                                                 On 12  August 1816, New Zealand’s first missionary
                                                                 school opened. The simple building measured about
                                                                 10m x 6m and included an area for Māori students
