ARCHITECTURE DESIGN PRINCIPLE - BALANCE

In developing a concept many element of a design
involve such as typography, colors, images, shapes,
and patterns. All these elements carry it own visual

weight. In architectural design some elements are
heavy and draw the eye, while other elements are

lighter. There is a type of concept where the design
elements that are laid out on a page should create
a feeling of balance. Balance is the concept of

visual equilibrium, and relates to our physical sense
of balance. Balance is the distribution of the visual

weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. If Figure 39 : Sample of symmetry balance
the design was a scale, these elements should
be balanced to make a design feel stable. It is a

reconciliation of opposing forces in a composition
that results in visual stability. There are two basic

types of balance: symmetrical and asymmetrical.
For the symmetrical designs layout, elements of
equal weight on either side of an imaginary center

line. Asymmetrical balance uses elements of
differing weights, often laid out in relation to a line

that is not centered within the overall design. Figure 40 : Sample of asymmetry balance
